Water & Wastewater Process Engineer


Position Responsibilities

Job Summary: This position provides technical support relative to process performance, optimization, and improvements at the Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) and Water Treatment Plant (WTP).

Essential Duties

  • Serve as the design engineer, project manager, and construction contract administrator on small-mid size capital improvement projects.
  • Coordinate with other BPW engineering staff and/or consultants on major capital improvement projects. Serves as the primary facility representative on such projects.
  • Assist the Superintendents in the development of the capital improvement plan for the facilities.
  • Administer and monitor the plant reporting databases, interpret data trends, and update and create variables and reports as necessary for plant operations and regulatory reporting.
  • Assist with plant computerized modeling.
  • Oversee the Asset Management Programs to assure that plant assets are maintained and replaced as necessary to meet the level of service goals of the facilities.
  • Identify opportunities for process and/or equipment optimization and leads plant staff efforts to implement associated modifications.
  • Track treatment technology evolution to meet existing and expected future permit requirements in a sustainable manner.
  • Perform all other tasks as assigned.


Position Requirements

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil, environmental, mechanical, chemical, biosystems or related engineering field.
  • Ability to read and understand detailed drawings, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize demands to work effectively on multiple projects.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with coworkers, organizational officials and the general public in situations requiring tact and patience.
  • Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license.


Preferred Qualifications

  • At least five years of experience with wastewater treatment and/or water treatment design, operations, and/or maintenance.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
    Experience/familiarity with:
  • Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) and/or Computerized Maintenance Management Systems ;
  • (CMMS);
  • Aveva/Wonderware SCADA software
  • Hach WIMS
  • AutoCAD
  • BioWin modeling software
  • Allen Bradley PLCs (programmable logic controllers) and/or ladder logic.
  • Effective workplace reading, mathematics, and information locating skills as demonstrated through WorkKeys assessments (Workplace Documents – 5; Applied Math – 5; Graphic Literacy – 5).
  • Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

Normal office environment with minimum discomfort due to noise, dirt and dust.
Mental ability to often handle pressures related to working on multiple projects requiring attention to detail.
Work includes occasional exposure to heights, weather, fumes, odors, dust, dirt and/or contact with chemicals or toxins.
